Guide
How to run Meta ads for your music
The exact steps for Instagram and Facebook ads, in plain English: the accounts, the tracking, the campaign settings, the audience, the ad, and how to read the results. Free, no account.
Screens checked in a live Ads Manager on October 13, 2026. Meta renames things often, so if a label looks different, look for the setting by what it does.
The short version
- Send the ads to a smart link page that has your Pixel on it, not straight to Spotify. That is how you see what happened.
- Use Manual setup, the Engagement objective with a website conversion, an ad set budget you set yourself, and Advantage+ audience off.
- Make three genuinely different clips and run them together at about $10 to $22 a day. Cut the weakest third on day 4.
- Judge the song in Spotify for Artists two to three weeks later: saves and listeners, not the numbers in Ads Manager.
What this guide does not promise
- How many streams you will get. Nobody can say, and anyone who does is selling something.
- That ads rescue a song people scroll past. They amplify a song people already respond to.
- That the numbers below are audited. The published cost figures come from agencies and tools that sell this service.
Step 1
Before you spend: accounts, Pixel, and a test
Do this at least 3 days before the first ad. This is where most artists lose their first week.
New ad accounts, new Pages and new payment methods are where artists lose days to review and spending limits, and new accounts can be asked to verify. Set everything up well before launch, not on launch day.
In Meta Business settings, create a business portfolio and add your Facebook Page and your Instagram account (it has to be a Professional account). Create the ad account inside the portfolio, add a payment method, and set a spending limit in Billing equal to the amount you decided to spend, so a mistake cannot run up a bill.
In Events Manager, create your Pixel (Meta now calls it a dataset) and generate a Conversions API token. Put the Pixel ID and the token on the page your ads will send people to. On a Musuni smart link that is Links, then Page Style. Keep the token private: it goes only in that one field.
Then test it before you spend a cent. Open your smart link on your phone, accept tracking, tap a streaming platform, and check Events Manager, Test Events. You should see the tap-out event from both the browser and the server. If the server event is missing, fix that first.
- Business portfolio, Page, Instagram (Professional) and ad account all in place
- Payment method added and a spending limit set in Billing
- Pixel ID and Conversions API token on your smart link
- Test Events shows the tap-out from browser and server
Step 2
Start the campaign: Manual setup, Engagement
Meta’s defaults are tuned for Meta’s revenue. Each one needs a deliberate choice.
In Ads Manager click Create. The dialog offers “Meta AI-guided setup (Beta)” and “Manual campaign setup”. Make sure Manual is the one selected: Meta has defaulted to the AI-guided option, so check each time. Never use the Boost button.
Pick the Engagement objective, which Meta describes as good for conversions, among other things. On the campaign screen the default is “Campaign budget” at $25 a day (Advantage+ campaign budget). Choose “Ad set budget” instead so each ad set keeps its own money, and leave ad set budget sharing off.
Ignore the campaign score. It measures how much automation you accepted, not how good the campaign is. Special ad categories: none.
Step 3
Ad set: conversion, budget, dates
Website only, your dataset, your own budget, and an end date.
Engagement opens on “Message destinations”. Change the conversion location to Website (“Get people to engage with your website”). Choose your dataset. Without one, Ads Manager will not let you publish and points you to landing page views.
Pick the goal. The default is “Maximize number of conversions”, and you then choose the event on your page. Before release, or until your Pixel has seen about 50 tap-outs in a week, use “Maximize number of landing page views”, listed under Other goals. After that, use conversions on your tap-out event. A good smart link fires it only when someone taps out to a platform, so it counts real intent, not bots and accidental taps.
Set your own daily budget. With an ad set budget, Ads Manager suggests $20. About $10 to $22 a day is a sensible start, and $5 a day only tests a hook. The start time defaults to now and there is no end date, so set the start yourself and tick “Set an end date.”
Meta says an ad set needs about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit to leave the learning phase. So do not edit it for the first 3 days.
Step 4
Audience: turn Advantage+ audience off
With it on, your age range is only a suggestion.
With Advantage+ audience on, Meta treats your age range as a suggestion it can exceed. Only minimum age, location, language and custom-audience exclusions are hard limits. That is how music ads end up spending on people 65 and older.
Use the original audience options instead: age 18 to 50, your countries, and at most one genre-level interest. Choose global countries if you want streaming growth, or your home market if you want to tour. Never stack three or more interests.
After day 2, check Breakdown by Age in Ads Manager and cut anything spending on 55 and older.
Step 5
Placements: Instagram first
Ad-set placement exclusions are going away. Here is what still works.
The default is Advantage+ placements across Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network, WhatsApp and Threads. Ads Manager now warns that excluding placements inside an ad set is going away.
What still works: Account controls, Edit placement controls (it shows “None set” until you change it, and it applies to every campaign in that ad account), to exclude Audience Network, Marketplace and Facebook Home; Placement value rules to cut the bid on Facebook and Audience Network; and per-ad placement settings.
People who run music ads report most conversions come from Instagram Reels. Nobody has published a clean test of Reels against Stories, so read Breakdown by Placement after day 4 before you exclude anything else.
Step 6
The ad: the clip, the hook, and switching off the extras
Creative is the targeting now. Make three different clips.
Choose your Facebook Page and Instagram account. Ads Manager can open the ad on Carousel: choose “Single image or video.” Use 15 to 30 seconds at 9:16 with a crop that also works at 4:5. The first 1.5 to 3 seconds must stop the scroll: a lyric on screen, a question, or the moment that sounds most like the song.
Do not open with “OUT NOW.” Let the cover art fade in after the hook. In the text, name your genre and a scene or a lyric. Make three ads from different parts of the song (the verse, the chorus, the moment people remember). People who run these tests report that this alone can change the cost a lot.
A single ad can now hold up to 10 media, but the tag in the next step labels the ad, not the clip inside it. Use one clip per ad when you want to learn which clip works, and name each ad for what it tests, such as scene_horn.
Then uncheck “Multi-advertiser ads” (on by default, and it shows your ad next to other advertisers’ ads). Under Ad creative, click Edit on “Advantage+ creative enhancements” and on “Essential enhancements.” When we checked, Add music and Add animation (both labelled Meta AI) were on by default, and so was Adjust brightness and contrast. Turn off Add music and Add animation, because they put Meta-generated music and motion on your song, and leave the rest off.
In the creative setup, skip the “Creative generation” options (Your image, refined; New scenes and people; Fresh layouts). They start unticked. Meta says you can turn enhancements off at any time, and the defaults change, so check each time you create or duplicate an ad.
Use only footage you own or have the rights to.
- 3 clips from different parts of the song, 15 to 30 seconds
- A hook in the first 1.5 to 3 seconds, captions burned in
- Single image or video (not Carousel), multi-advertiser ads off, Add music and Add animation off
Step 7
Tag the ad so you can see which one worked
One line in the ad’s URL parameters labels every ad and placement.
Website URL: your smart link. At the bottom of the ad, open the Tracking section (it starts collapsed) and paste the line below into the URL parameters field. Or click “Build a URL parameter” and pick the same values from Meta’s list. Meta replaces the double-brace parts with the real campaign, ad name and placement, so you do not type anything per ad.
Your smart link’s analytics can then show visits, tap-outs and the tap-out rate for each ad and each placement. On Musuni that is Smart Links, Analytics, “Ads and placements.”
Paste this into the ad’s URL parameters
utm_source=meta&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}&utm_term={{placement}}Step 8
Days 1 to 3: leave it alone. Day 4: read it and cut
The most common mistake is touching it too soon.
For the first three days, only check that the ads were approved and are spending. Editing resets learning.
On day 4, compare the tap-out rate of each ad. Turn off the weakest third and leave the winners untouched. Look at Breakdown by placement and by country in Ads Manager for the next decision. If every ad is poor, change the clip (a different hook), not the budget.
Step 9
After release: a new campaign with the same winners
Do not edit the running campaign. Start a new one.
Create a new campaign with the same settings, your best ads, the text “Listen now,” and the goal on the tap-out. Keep the pre-release ad set running for people who already saw it, or turn it off.
Judge the song in Spotify for Artists, not in Ads Manager: saves and listeners two to three weeks after the last ad dollar, because much of a good campaign’s streaming arrives afterward.
Step 10
Read the numbers honestly
A tap-out is not a stream and not a save.
A tap-out is a tap to a streaming platform. It is not a stream and not a save. Published cost figures come from agencies and tools that sell this service, so treat them as a rough guide: under about $0.50 per tap-out is a strong first campaign, $0.50 to $1.50 is normal, and well above $2 means fix the clip or the audience before adding money.
From your second campaign on, beat your own best number. If the cost stays high after you changed the audience and tried a genuinely different clip, this song is not connecting with cold audiences right now. Keeping the rest of the budget for the next release is a good result.
Mistakes that burn money
Using the Boost button
It skips the settings that matter here: the objective, the audience and the placements.
Keeping Meta’s AI-guided setup
It is the default in the Create dialog. Choose Manual so you decide each setting.
Leaving Advantage+ audience on
Your age range becomes a suggestion, and the spend drifts to people who will not stream you.
Optimizing for clicks
Clicks collect accidental taps. Optimize on a real action on your smart link.
Editing in the first 3 days
Every significant edit resets the learning phase and costs you the data.
Raising the budget too fast
Practitioners report cost per result rising when budgets jump. Raise about 20% only when cost holds.
No way to see which ad worked
Without a Pixel and tagged links you learn nothing from the spend, even when it works.
Believing a stream promise
Cost-per-stream claims are not audited. Judge by saves and listeners in Spotify for Artists.
Questions
- How much should I spend on Meta ads for a single?
- A sensible first test is about $10 to $22 a day for the run-up and release week. $5 a day only tests a hook. Set a spending limit in Billing equal to the total you decided, so a mistake cannot run up a bill.
- Can I run ads before my song is out?
- Yes. Before release, send people to a pre-save or smart link page and optimize for landing page views until your Pixel has seen about 50 tap-outs a week. After release, start a new campaign optimized on the tap-out to a streaming platform.
- Do I need a Pixel?
- To publish a website conversion campaign, Ads Manager needs a dataset (the Pixel). Without one you can only optimize for landing page views. A Pixel on your smart link, with a Conversions API token, also lets you see which ad led to a tap-out.
- Should I use the Boost button on a post?
- We recommend against it for this goal. Boosting skips the objective, audience and placement settings that decide where your money goes.
- How do I know the ads worked?
- Ads Manager tells you the cost per tap-out. Spotify for Artists tells you whether it mattered: saves, listeners and countries, two to three weeks after the last ad dollar.
- Does Musuni run the ads for me?
- No. Musuni never spends your money or touches your ad account. Ads Coach walks you through your own Ads Manager, and the Release Plan adds a personal review from Amah and an ad launch review: if you run ads, Amah checks your setup before you spend and your first results a few days in.
