You follow your curiosity wherever it goes, and the sound changes every time you do.
Your fans are fellow travelers. They didn't sign up for a genre. They signed up for you, and they trust you to take them somewhere they wouldn't have gone alone. That makes your audience smaller and more adventurous than most: people who dig through your back catalog and send you records they think you'd like. What they need from you is a thread to hold, so they can tell it's still you.
You leave before anyone has a chance to find you.
You leave before anyone can find you. Every pivot resets the audience you just started building, and from the outside it can look like nobody is driving. You may have songs in four genres on your profile right now, and a stranger can't tell which one is you. "I'll figure out the thread later" is how a lot of talented people stay unknown.
This might not fit if you're chasing one perfect sound rather than new ones, and you'd rather go deeper than wider. If so, read The Sound Architect.
